The title of this collection was The Hot Puppies' reaction when it was mooted
that they might like to revisit their earlier recordings. Thankfully they were
persuaded otherwise.
Over My Dead Body collates radio sessions, downloads, live favourites, some of
the band's better b-sides and a smattering of hitherto lost songs. More than a
ragbag collection of offcuts, the quality here is consistently high.
Relentless, Party and Turn Your Eyes To Me all once helped ignite the band's
live set, but until now never made it to disc. Of the previous b-sides, Closed
To Sin, A Small Killing and All We've Got To Do Is Kiss deservedly get a repeat
prescription.
But the real finds are the previously hidden gems, the pick of which is Girl
Crazy - a rampant teen drama complete with sumptuous vocal harmonies, which
channels the spirits of Spector and the Shangri-Las.
Had this been released as the Puppies' debut album two years ago, it would have
done them no harm at all. Casual and dedicated fans alike, however, may question
paying full price now for just seven previously unreleased songs.
Misgivings aside, these songs, full of small-town Salomes, sinners and surf
guitar, illustrate the quality control of this ever-ambitious and perfectionist
band. That they were somehow deemed unworthy until now only adds to their charm.
