█░ The first time I saw Ester was on a summer night in ░█
█░ Valencia. Her group was playing opposite ours in a benefit ░█
█░ concert in defense of a green spot threatened by real estate ░█
█░ interests. The band was called Black Train and they were ░█
█░ heavily into straight ahead jazz tinged with some shades of ░█
█░ blues. Ester seemed the leader and although she was barely a ░█
█░ teenager she sang with so much conviction and honesty that ░█
█░ we all wondered: "Where does this girl come from?". We met ░█
█░ again on several occasions after that and each time I heard ░█
█░ her sing I was amazed by her tremendous ability to absorb ░█
█░ everything she had been learning in master classes and ░█
█░ clinics, from records or fake books. No wonder if tell you ░█
█░ that this young Valencian lady, born in 1976, is an ░█
█░ extremely hard-working person who is very critical with ░█
█░ herself and does not take her profession lightly. After ░█
█░ several years paying dues and cutting her teeth in her own ░█
█░ groups and with the Ximo TΘbar Band in festivals and clubs ░█
█░ throughout Spain, the next logical question was: "When are ░█
█░ you going to record something of your own, Ester?" This is ░█
█░ the result. This CD, produced by guitarist Ximo TΘbar, was ░█
█░ recorded in one single session, just like in the old days. ░█
█░ Although she loves taking risks, she has preferred to play ░█
█░ it safe on her first CD, at least as far as her sidemen are ░█
█░ concerned: a trio led by Spain╣s new jazz sensation, pianist ░█
█░ Albert Sanz with Pere Loewe con acoustic bass and Esteve Pφ ░█
█░ on drums The choice of her repertoire is typical, though: ░█
█░ seldom performed tunes and a great amount of risk. She has ░█
█░ not chosen the easiest way for her debut record. Such hard ░█
█░ tunes as "Teniu Lo Mok" and "Tardor", both written by Albert ░█
█░ Sanz, are handled with authority by Ester and even the the ░█
█░ Brazilian classic "Chega De Saudade" is revisited in 7/4. ░█
█░ Ester is first of all a musician: that╣s why she loves to ░█
█░ engage in battles with her peers scatting against Ximo╣s ░█
█░ guitar in "Acid Changes", Carlos Martφn╣s trombone in "Chega ░█
█░ De Saudade", or trading fours with Esteve Pφ in "I╣m ░█
█░ Old-Fashioned". But it is especially in ballads where you ░█
█░ have to listen to Ester. She knows how to recreate them by ░█
█░ toying deliciously with time and endowing them with a ░█
█░ gentleness quite uncommon for someone her age. "My One And ░█
█░ Only Love", wisely reharmonized by Ximo TΘbar", is a good ░█
█░ sample, and also "Tristeza De Amar", which features a lovely ░█
█░ solo by Joan Soler. In short, a splendid calling card of a ░█
█░ singer whose talent has been, for too long, an open secret ░█
█░ in and around Valencia, an area which has produced so many ░█
█░ fine jazz musicians. Don╣t miss her if you can hear her ░█
█░ live. ░█
