Release Notes:
New York City singer/songwriter Mike Bones will
make his solo recorded debut on Nov. 6 with the
release of The Sky Behind The Sea on his own The
Social Registry label.
Bones, born Mike Strallow in New Jersey, has
previously played guitar with The Mighty
Flashlight, Damon McMahon and Lizzie Trulie. He's
currently in Soldiers Of Fortune, who also include
members of Oneida, Home and Oakley Hall.
"Though he's probably the best pure guitarist I've
ever played with, he has the taste to let his
talents serve his songs," says Oneida's Kid
Millions. "In the spirit of Richard Thompson, Bones
is a full artist and craftsman: the real deal."
Bones began recording the album last year with
Barry London at Brooklyn's Ocropolis studio, which
is owned by London and Oneida. He received help
from Home bassist Brad Truax, drummers Parker
Kindred (Antony And The Johnsons) and Oran Canfield
(Child Abuse), pianists Wilder Zoby (El-P) and
Patrick Sullivan (Oakley Hall), cellist Kirsten
McCord, labelmate and violinist Samara Lubelski,
and London, who played synthesizers and engineered
the recordings.
"I showed everyone the songs very quickly, maybe
just a verse and a chorus," says Bones. "We
recorded very loose takes because I didn't want
anything like a definitive version of any one song.
I wanted to feel like I was playing these songs for
the first time."
