█░█ I fell in love with New York-based band White █░█
█░█ Magic some time ago now, on the release of their █░█
█░█ still matchless debut EP 'Through the Sun Door'. █░█
█░█ Since then they wowed us with the shimmering 'Dat █░█
█░█ Rosa Mel Apibus' full-length and now their back █░█
█░█ on EP territory with this marvellous new offering █░█
█░█ from Drag City. I don't know what it is about the █░█
█░█ band's sound but it seems to lend itself so well █░█
█░█ to the EP format, the succinct twenty minutes on █░█
█░█ this doesn't seem too short or too long, rather █░█
█░█ the four tracks seem perfectly rounded and █░█
█░█ measured as a release. The whole EP format has █░█
█░█ fallen by the wayside in recent years so it's █░█
█░█ nice to see both the band and label supporting it █░█
█░█ and 'Dark Stars' is as coherent an EP as you can █░█
█░█ imagine - no remixes here, just solid new tracks. █░█
█░█ We kick off with Mira Billotte's now signature █░█
█░█ piano and vocal sounds, reverberating through the █░█
█░█ smoky 70s psychedelic folk haze with a cynical █░█
█░█ percussive twist coming from drummer █░█
█░█ extraordinaire Jim White. 'Shine on Heaven' is █░█
█░█ the archetypal White Magic song and the EP starts █░█
█░█ as it means to go on, with the woozy drunken █░█
█░█ blues of 'Very Late', something like Nico heard █░█
█░█ through a Supermarket Soundsystem while a pub █░█
█░█ band plays beneath. The best however is saved █░█
█░█ until last, with a track penned by guitarist █░█
█░█ Douglas Shaw; 'Winds' is developed, light and █░█
█░█ beautiful - a final crack of light in the mire of █░█
█░█ doomy darkness if you will and the perfect █░█
█░█ conclusion to a wonderful collection of songs. █░█
█░█ Drag City certainly have a talent for compile █░█
█░█ short and sweet releases - and this is about as █░█
█░█ short and sweet as it gets in the wonderful world █░█
█░█ of off-kilter singer-songwriter material. █░█
