VAMPIRE HANDS don't suck. They kill. 2 years old and running, and
rocking from the same Minneapolis scene that brought you wartime
warehouse weirdos BROTHER & SISTER, STNNNG, GAY BEAST, and HAUNTED
HOUSE, VAMPIRE HANDS, as the moniker would suggest, offer a
slightly darker take on the party procedural. These dudes like
their Wooly Booly right before The End, and give the wanton rock
minded listener a solid and dirty take on "la historia de la
musica rock" with a finger pressing play on the NUGGETS box set,
all four discs at once.
So what's that mean for you the listener? Why would you want to
hear this record? I like it because of the melodies, harmonies,
and the adherence to solid rhythms, but what sets it apart from
your typical DAYS INN cover fest, is VAMPIRE HANDS focus on
experimentation, and chaos, as complements to good old true blue
American songwriting. Like a trip ending with Jimi's guitar on
fire, a handful of downers, and a sweet sled down thrill hill.
This ain't strictly psych, but dudes are probably into SIMPLY
SAUCER. And if you want to play the "inspiration KEVIN BACON game"
take the current Detroit garage scene highlighted by luminaries
THE DETROIT COBRAS, THE WHITE STRIPES, and THE GO, time travel and
add BOB SEGER's "LUCY BLUE era" band, and then transport said
scene hefty to the Minnesota DIY art nice, where the ghosts shout
Hootie Hoo and Husker Du. Minneapolis' VAMPIRE HANDS space race
backwards across the years amongst the rock and roll asteroids and
return from the mission gifting the present day garage rock scene
an unique addition to the dramatic art rock styling of bands like
ROXY MUSIC and KING CRIMSON.
Are you beginning to get a clearer picture of why this might
appeal to you. Guitars/drums/bass? Check. Reverb/synths/drugs?
Check. Falsetto? Check. Party? Check. Do you like CAN, BRIAN ENO,
ROYAL TRUX, VELVET UNDERGROUND, IGGY POP and ROXY MUSIC, and are
you interested in music that draws reference to said artists while
wholly maintaining and creating something new? If you said 'yes'
and/or 'give me a beer' then please listen to this record.
And if you need further reason, please consider the acclaimed
source. VAMPIRE HANDS 2007 debut LP, VIRGIN DUST AMERICAN LIPS
comes happy from the good folks at FREEDOM FROM, the same label
that gave you HAIR POLICE, SIGHTINGS, BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL, NO
DOCTORS, REYNOLS, the END TIMES FESTIVAL and potentially a rash -
on your hands - vampire.
