...pieces by ground/lift use the song-form once in a clearer,
once in a more hidden way. First of all because we consider
the song as the highest (because most transparent) of all
possible music forms, on the other hand because we aim at
clarity and transparency of our ideas. However, the musical
form " song " is regarded exactly in the same way as musical
material, like sound or composing elements, which means also
this form has to put up with abstractions and alienations.

Ground/Lift is the collaborative project of two Austrian
musicians : Christoph Pajer and Oliver Stotz, and sets the two
members guitar playing in amongst a bed of electronics and
chopped samples. Probably the most experimental album on the
Radian-curated Karate Joe label, Ground/Lift manages to be
totally obtuse at times and then at others entirely
straightforward and listenable. One moment drifting into
crunching concrete sounds and mangled vocal samples, then the
next youÆll here fingerpicked guitar and sung vocalsà itÆs a
strange mix but is carried off with ease. Very occasionally
the more æartyÆ segments of the album can grate, but when the
band get it right û (the Reich-meets-Delia Derbyshire squelch
of æKlagitÆ for example) the results are explosive.
