     Featured Artist: Scott Amendola Band

     CD Title: Cry

     Year: 2003

     Record Label: Cryptogramophone

     Style: Contemporary Jazz

Musicians: Jenny Scheinman(violin), Nels Cline(guitar), Eric
     Crystal(saxophones), Todd Sickafoose(acoustic bass), Carla
     Bozulich(vocals on Masters of War),and Scott Amendola(drums).

Review: The Scott Amendola Band blends avant garde, rock and
blues on their CD, Cry. It is a CD that stretches the
boundaries of contemporary jazz without going too far out. It
is a perfect blend of urban and traditional sounds.
On His Eye Is On The Sparrow, violinist Judy Scheinman does a
unique rendition of this gospel classic. It also has a bluesy
sound that doesn't dominate the spiritual nature of the song.
On Bantu, the band takes us to Africa with lively percussion by
lead member Scott Amendola. Saxophonist Eric Crystal also
delivers a fantastic performance while Scheinman adds the
harmony. This would make a good TV theme song. Calling all
networks! On A Cry for John Brown, the band has an eclectic and
unusually happy tone considering the fact that John Brown was a
martyr for the abolition of slavery. You can also hear a lot
more of guitarist Nels Cline on this track, who adds the rock
element to this song. The saxophone is almost non-existent
     here.

What I didn't like about this CD was it tended to be a little
bit too avant garde for me. For example, Whisper, Scream was
horrible because all of the instruments clashed and they
sounded like cymbals clanging together. In addition, the violin
sounded like loud screams during an argument.

My Son, The Wanderer was my favorite song on the CD because it
had a funky but melancholic sound. Once again the guitar was
dominant the saxophone sounds were harmonious. Scott Amendola's
drumming was also fantastic. In spite of its' title, Streetbeat
reminds me of hard bop artists such as John Coltrane and Miles
Davis. I also love the choppy style of the song. I think this
is the only danceable song on the CD. This is a wonderful CD
that blends African, jazz, gospel and rock to create an
eclectic blend of music. Scott Amendola and his talented
sidekicks bring a fresh approach to contemporary jazz. I'll
give this CD three smoked hams.
