We've long been obsessing over Rock Tomlinson's
crucial Voice of the Seven Woods project, but like
many others we couldn't help feeling that the recent
self-titled full-length didn't quite display the full array
of his talents.
After a string of incredibly collectible 7"s and cdrs there
was quite a level of expectation for the album, and while
it was diverse, succinct and hugely enjoyable it lacked
some of the virtuosity hinted at with his earlier work.
Then, of course, he goes and releases this absolutely
devastating 10" and all bets are off - we'd even go so
far as to say that 'The Holy Harbour' is our favourite
release from Tomlinson to date, easily seating him
amongst the best in the modern psychedelic scene.
Apparently the US version of the album included these
two tracks as a bonus (lucky buggers)but here we get
them on a separate release, and what a release it is
- two epic almost ten-minute long pieces which explore
the outer realms of Middle Eastern psychedelia and
British folk. As usual Tomlinson's virtuoso skill on the
guitar plays a central part, but it sounds as if his wish
to make his instrument of choice sound something like
a cheap Turkish saz is finally coming true with the strings
buzzing on each fret sounding almost transcendent
at times.
This is spiritual psychedelic music and with the first
piece exploring the outer realms of beatless tangled
fretwork, the second goes on to add percussion and
almost tumbles into Amon Duul II territory, putting paid
to all the hype that may surround Voice of the Seven
Woods right now.
Gloriously packaged and pressed to lurvely 10" vinyl,
it's just great music. Essential!
