The latest 7" on the Type label brings together two sides of stunning
instrumental music - music that transcends the usual post-rock
categorizations, taking in elements of far freer musical styles that only
proves to demonstrate the San Francisco band's rare ability to emote through
experimentalism. The gentlest of elements seem to come together in moments
of quiet alchemy on this 7". Tarentel traverse the same musical hinterlands
as a group like Supersilent in that their music seems to evolve organically
and intuitively through group improvisation, yet the crucial impulse here is
melody. Haunting keys and broken guitar phrases hang loosely in the air like
mournful, half-finished sentences, all the while shuffling percussion
creates a sort of taut, shivering ambience. And that's just the first side.
The flipside prompts an entirely murkier trip that veers into outright
psychedelics. Droning organ, bowed percussion and thunderous drums are
dressed-up with ominously clanking bells for an eerie lost-at-sea vibe.
Magnificent.
