Limbering up for the release of Skallander's eponymous debut album for Type,
both the group's members have convened to remix their own work under the
guise of their own respective solo projects. By means of some introduction,
Skallander is in fact the collaborative project of New Zealanders Bevan
Smith (better known to electronic music fans as Signer) and jazz guitarist
Matthew Mitchell. The pair have been playing together since their high
school days, but have now embarked upon a campaign of warped pop music for
Type records. Given Type's recent slew of releases - Grouper, Zelienople,
The North Sea - you'd swear they'd abandoned the silicon chip altogether.
Thankfully this is not the case. Album track 'Future Life' has been
electronically reinterpreted in two wildly differing ways by the two
artists, with the Signer remix holding on to the more rhythmic, song-based
structural elements, sounding like Khonnor intermingling with Radiohead.
Over on the flipside, Muriel Tsains (that's Mitchell's nom de plume) decides
to flip-reverse it and mangles the audio into a variety of
backwards-travelling filtrations, with a hint of Fennesz about it. It's an
interesting way of going about things: unveiling remixes before you let
people hear the source material; a smart way of getting you all hot and
bothered about the imminent full-length, I'd say. Fabulous stuff...
