Hearing the first sounds of On Becoming An Island
by Erstlaub it's clear that this is not about exotic islands.
"On Becoming An Island" is another step forward in
the work of Dave Fayns aka Erstlaub.
From his first works on, Fyans has been evolving from
pure minimal drones to a richer multi-layered sound.
Although he has always kept an ear on the doom and
miserablism (as he would call it himself, see also The
Goodnight Stars).
The mood he sets brings no place for happiness, instead
this is music about isolation and loneliness. Erstlaub
has created an album that is about someone sliding away
into isolation, whether it is by building up a wall or by
neglecting by others is the only question remaining.
The person is becoming an island, just as the title suggests.
On Becoming An Island is an one track album but sounds
as if it's been created out of several shorter pieces.
In the different pieces certain elements seem to return,
such as the use of ultra low sounds and high pitched binaural
sounds. New in this album compared to his older works is
the use of field recordings. Or maybe he just has done a
great job with synthesis in creating sounds of streaming
water and the howling winds.
Besides these non-rhythmic sounds, Erstlaub also seems
to find a way to fit in subtle rhythms, melodies and harmonies
that could have been stolen from the album Quiet City by
Pan American. With this he steps away from loads of his
colleagues in the drone world and it makes this music more
interesting for listeners outside the drone field.
