Electronica's preeminent theorist, DJ Spooky,
strengthens his notion of turntablism as the
postmodern revelator of truth on CREATION REBEL, a
digital trip through classic reggae tracks
released on the Trojan label. Subtitled RE-MIXED,
RE-VISIONED, RE-VERSIONED, the album proves DJ
Spooky capable of all three: this is vintage
Jamaican music put through a 21st-century particle
accelerator, deconstructed, then artfully
reconstructed with a sense of endless invention.
What's most remarkable is Spooky's allegiance to
the spirit of these original tracks. He preserves
their essential spirit while imbuing it with his
own, making plain the connection between
electronica artistry and the work of innovative
Jamaican producers like King Tubby and Lee Perry.
