After rescuing a box of old records from Value Village in
Dartmouth, NS, guitarist/bassist Nicholas Wolfe asked
Singer/Songwriter Patrick McNally to start a band that
sounded like all the Neil Young, CCR, The Band, The Beatles,
Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan records he had found. Patrick
had been writing his own songs for a while, but had never
envisioned them performed by a band. He readily agreed to
join.
Later, when Nicholas was at practice for his other band,
Money, he mentioned the band he and Patrick were putting
together. Willis and Dylan Ryan, who were the other members
of Money, immediately signed on.
Dylan, who had always drummed at breakneck speed, finally had
the chance to focus on the music instead of the speed. And
Willis, with songs he'd written that could not fit into
Money, had a venue to actually sing instead of screaming to
be heard.
Finally, as the musicians who would become The Grass were
assembling, their good friend Adam Burke witnessed one of the
band's first practices and saw the potential they had
together. Since there were already three guitar players
(Willis, Nicholas, and Pat take turns playing the bass), Adam
bought a piano and taught himself rock and roll chords. He
proved adept at picking out songs and chord changes, and
became a full member soon after learning his instrument.
Adam also thought up "The Grass" after a Walt Whitman poem he
read for one of his university classes.
A few months later, Lindsay Rogers, who occasionally played
keyboard with Money, revealed she had been playing Violin for
ages. A lassically trained violin player, she began playing
with The Grass and quickly wielded her instrument as a fiddle
as well. Young Geoffrey Tobin, a multi-instrumentalist who
alternates between organ and slide guitar for the band,
rounded out the original lineup. Young Geoffrey is currently
completing his journalism degree and has not been performing
with the band for the last year.
There is a lot of chemistry on stage -- a testament to both
their individual and collective experiences. The camaraderie
among each of the six band members comes from their long
friendships together and a shared desire to play music with
each other. You can see it in their live show -- Willis,
Patrick, and Nicholas interchange their guitars and bass
almost without thinking; set lists are ditched for requests
shouted from the audience; and laughs are shared if someone
messes up, even though no one but The Grass notices. For
these talented young musicians, it's all about having a great
time.es
With every member in their early twenties, The Grass have the
time and energy to play music together every day, record
whenever possible, and play live anywhere and everywhere.
With a melting pot of musical styles, and a style distinctly
their own, The Grass has been drawing fans into the heart of
Canadiana, grass-roots rock for two years. Offering up as
many albums, the band recently left Nova Scotia to contribute
their sound to the national capital's thriving rock scene.
Their debut release, Mulgrave, was nominated for the 2006
Music Nova Scotia Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year.
While promoting their sophmore album, Oranges , last fall,
the band found themselves in venues all across Canada --
including performing on a flatbed truck in the middle of the
countryside with 40 thongs decorating the stage. They even
brought a little Canada to Austin , TX this past March when
they were invited to showcase at the South By Southwest Music
Festival (SXSW 2007).
The move to Ottawa was a smart one as they were quick to land
a mainstage performance at this summer's Cisco Ottawa
Bluesfest. The Grass is currently on their second
cross-Canada tour in support of their third full-length
release, Report All Ghosts, an album that the Ottawa Xpress
boasts, "recreates their signature retro sound and fuses
Beatlesesque psychedelica with the swagger of old-school
Rolling Stones and Neil Young".
