People who love alt-country, americana and roots
music probably won't put any interest in the new
album by Dropkick - Music To Watch Sheep By - only
by seeing the record cover. Understandable but also
pity. Understandable because of the 60's design on
the cover (which for some reason has four images of
Lego bricks). Too bad, because Music To Watch Sheep
By (Taylored Records) from the brothers Alastair and
Andrew Taylor, is just a really good album.
'Harmony-driven alt-country power-pop from Scotland'
is how they describe themselves, and that's not a
word too much said. These two brothers form a wonder
duo because they play almost everything, like:
guitar, lap steel, accordion, percussion, bass,
ukulele, harmonica, resonator guitar, bells, banjo,
drums, mandolin, bouzouki and chimes. However, their
best instruments are there voices, especially when
they sing together, 'cause that's the way it goes
with family couples like the brothers Louvin, Everly
and Brown. Dropkick's sound can be compared to The
Gourds, Graham Parker, Billy Bragg and Spanic Boys
but they describe it on their website as being like
ôBuddy Holly playing 'duelling banjos' with Paul
McCartney'. Whatever, this album plays along at high
speed with their catchy country pop, and before you
know it, the album has ended (in 37 minutes to be
exact). Then you'll run to your cd-player to turn it
on again for another 37 minutes of Dropkick.
