Release Notes
Since 1990, Mark Allen has been Djing what was then called 'Trance' music all
over the world. A spell enjoying the musical melting pot of Goa in 1990
launched Mark's passion for groovy and psychedelic dance music. Back in
London, he set up the notorious 'Pagan' parties, which ran at various
underground venues in London throughout the early 90s. Early recordings made
with several underground producers lead on to hooking up with producer Tim
Healey to form their 'Quirk' project. Two albums released on Tsuyoshi
Suzuki's 'Matsuri' label left no doubt that Quirk were a constantly evolving
force, reaching sonic territory well beyond the limits of a banging dance
floor. Mark and Tim still write together at regular intervals, mostly under
their new project name 'Allen & Healey'. In 1995 Mark co-founded London's
first Psychedelic Trance club: 'Return to the Source', which went on to
become a globally renowned superclub. As his reputation on the international
scene spread, Mark's overseas DJ bookings began to dominate his schedule,
with regular visits all over Europe, to Australia, Japan, the US and Israel.
Highlights have included the Burning Man Festival, when it was still in the
middle of Nevada's Black Rock Desert, several epic open air festivals on
Mount Fuji, Morocco, Guadeloupe and following solar eclipses in Venezuela,
Hungary and Zambia. Since moving his studio and home to Brighton, 3 years
ago, Mark's music and DJ sets and music production have continued to evolve,
forever exploring new grooves and sonic textures.
'Hopefiend' is Mark Allen's main solo project, allowing him to write tunes
which form the cornerstones of his DJ sets. No track reaches the cutting room
without rigorous road testing. Party People from Tokyo to Tel Aviv are
regularly helping to refine and define the Tough, trippy, Funky Trance that
is Hopefiend. He is currently working on a Hopefiend album, due for release
in late 2002. While the majority of Mark's DJ sets could be described as the
slower, funkier end of Trance, given the opportunity, Mark also enjoys
playing cheese-free chunky house music with a psychedelic edge.
Mark also co-writes regularly with Tim Healey (also known for his progressive
House solo project "Electric Tease") with various project names, including
Quirk, Quixotic, Updata and Allen & Healey.
Most of Mark And Tim's music has been produced at their Brighton studio,
"QHQ" and released via one of the following labels: Automatic, Transient,
Atomic, Kamaflage, Flying Rhino or Plusquam.
