jeremy dower is the most recent of plug research's new recruits.
his debut album "echo-systems v 1.0" was released mid 1997 under
the pseudonym "tetrphnm" by the independent australian label
"droll music systems". it was an austere collection of heavily
textured low resolution ambient poly-rhythms. the album set the
path for his ongoing interest in blending seemingly contradictory
elements together. where "echo-systems v 1.0" had moments of
melodic ambient warmth shining through the spiky/blocky beats the
new music is awash with sentimental brass solos, always honest and
sincere. sharp, blippy, cut, and unpolished low-fidelity noises
generated on the most outmoded of 80s synthesizers is contrasted
with the softest and smoothest virtual trumpets and saxophones
created by sophisticated contemporary synthesis technology. jeremy
dower's music is human, organic, rustic, accessible and old, but
also modern, synthetic, experimental and abstract. at times it is
"sentimental dance music for couples" with the faint flavor of
late 70s and early 80s tv theme songs, with a darker undercurrent,
somewhere between monolake, pluramon, schlampietzieger, tortoise,
and cylob's "cylobian sunset".
jeremy dower has been performing within australia for the last 5
years. during this time he has been a key figure within a new
generation of melbournian electronic musicians who have
contributed to the maturation of australian tech-music, (voiteck
a.k.a. td5, hand eye co-ordination, sense, light surprise and
constancy, and david franske a.k.a. dj hok / tet et hok to name
just a few).
