From the sleeve:
"Firstly this is not a mix album! It seems to me with the
current saturation of greatest ever, the definitive (fill
in new sub-genre of dance music here) mixed by dj nobody
but got two decks. That people have forgotten about the
good old fashioned art of sitting down at home of an
evening. Selecting your favourite records and making a
great tape to impress your friends. If you are laying down
you all-time greats. Why ruin them by pitching them up and
fading out the front and end? A classic song is classic
from start to end so let's hear it all! Well. Imaging
taking this scenario and trying to define the records that
make you who you are! The songs that shape you as a
person. Meaning different things to you at different times
of your life. These records start to take you on a larger
significance than memories. So here are mine twenty four
tracks that have bowled me over when I heard them. Some
new, some old, but all are equally influential from the
optimistic melancholy of Brian Eno and King Crimson to the
chord memory template of 808 state. The production class
of the Human League and the sheer bliss of Grace Jones "la
vie en rose". All these songs have warranted hundreds of
plays from my hi-fi. never tiring of these. They become
like old friends, reminding you of times spent with them.
Picking current favourites is always hard even harder
elevating them to classic status, but some songs qualify
themselves to that level almost instantly. Thee Maddkatt
Courtship for example. A track which made sense from the
first crackle. Had me pre-empting every note before it
came out. Like remembering the song of your dreams. I
included two of my own tracks. One with my new band Zoot
Woman. To explain and to bring sense into the equation of
my music. The association of these songs perheps provides
clues as to where I am coming from.
A good cover is almost impossible to create. Especially
when dabbling with such artists as David Bowie and the
basic rule I believe is complete reinterpretation. Which
is what makes Lb Ashes to Ashes so amazing a stunning flip
on the original brining it into the 21st century so
effortlessy. Something I have always tried to do with my
own sound having in intense hate for world retro.
I hope you enjoy this compilation. Trying to represent
your musical spectrum over 24 tracks feels like a small
injustice, but it was great fun to compile and hopefully
will find you and interesting insight.
Jacques Lu Cont"
