Satoko Fujii - accordion
Kazuhiko Tsumura - guitar
Norikatsu Koreyasu - bass
Who would've guessed that rowdy pianist Satoko Fujii could
churn out music that is as subtle and poetic as what's
contained within the realms of this CD. Her quartet Gato
Libre's second effort, "Nomad" is a quiet little record that
is more reminiscent of ECM shores than the majority of the
rambunctious material she's produced so far. Accompanied by
her husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, guitarist Kazuhiko
Tsumura and bassist Norikatsu Koreyasu, Fujii switches
instruments and trades in the piano for an accordion. To say
this change brings about a most radical turnaround is an
understatement. Not only does the music become more poetic, it
flows smoothly and is unobstructed by anything it may bump
into. No conflicts are apparent anywhere within the vicinity
of these sounds. Not a tatter of a fight or personality
issues. Every one of the quartet's players understand each
other's wants and needs and works on those. This is not about
the "me", this is about "you" session turns into a lyrical
concerto. While Tamura's trumpet sounds more majestically bold
than ever before, guitarist Tsumura picks wildly through
pleasant flamenco and dramatic blues and folk shifts. Bassist
Koreyasu is afforded a great bounce-off opportunity as he
plays some lovely passages with the guitarist. Fujii's
accordion sounds are mesmerizing in their clarity of purpose
and their purity of intent. She's a little bit less melodic
version of Guy Klucevsek, but with a particular twist in her
playing. I don't hear her modeling herself based on any one
individual. There are as many klezmer elements to be found
here, as there are swing and light-hearted blues dabbling.
Indeed, this is a record with contrasts that are subdued,
pleasant and even refined. For those who enjoy a vintage
merlot by the fireplace, "Nomad" is an album to call home.
