THE CASSANDRA COMPLEX
"Finland" EP
(1990 - Play it again Sam - BIAS 151)
This electronic and guitar band was formed in Leeds, England, in the
mid-80s, with a line-up consisting of Rodney Orpheus (vocals), Paul
Dillon (keyboards) and Andy Booth (guitar). Their first single, "March",
came out in April 1985, on their own Complex RAP label. Lyrically, it
concerned the perception of liberty: "Everyone's got a concept of
freedom. Some people think that freedom is having the right to work;
to another way of thinking, having the right not to work is freedom".
Before this they had also constructed their own basement studio, and
organized several "events" that took the form of live shows with visuals,
run on an autonomous basis. They were originally housed on Rouska
Records, a small independent label based in Leeds, on which they
released the singles "Datakill" and "Moscow Idaho", and the album
Grenade in 1986. The latter contained some potent, though some argued,
egocentric, observations: "When I grow up I'm gonna buy myself a bomb
big enough to blow up the future" ran one lyric. Significantly, they
were not averse to covering Throbbing Gristle's "Something Came Over Me"
live and on record.
However, their real audience seemed to be in mainland Europe, where
they are now based. Signing to Play It Again Sam Records, they released
Theomania in the summer of 1988, followed by FINLAND two years later.
One of the tracks on this album, "Let's Go To Europe", spoke for itself.
Their 1991 album took its title from a quote by Russian mystic
Gurdjieff, and was typically cluttered with pseudo-intellectual baggage
throughout.
It was little surprise that their guitar/synthesizer hard pop remained
more popular on the continent than in their homeland.

MORAL DiSCLAiMER: We are very aware of the fact that our releases
contibute to the growing sale losses of record companies.
Unfortunately our style primarily targets small, independant labels
that need sales to survive.
For these reasons we ask you not to distribute this release on public
sites or Napster; if more and more receive their music from the net,
artists and labels will have to face even less sells than nowadays.
Please do not consider this release as a substitute to the original, but
only as a way to check out and learn about new music.
We absolutely do not approve of DJs or other individuals that earn
money from pirated music - Don't let them get their hands on it!
By buying the albums you like you disperse the guilt we feel by
releasing this music - Enjoy the music and be fair with the artists!
YOUR support is required to keep them financially alive and producing!
