███ ItÆs hard to believe but this is the 17th record for ███
███ German multi-instrumentalist Stephan Micus to be ███
███ released on the ECM label. HeÆs almost as productive ███
███ as Uwe Schmidt and thatÆs saying something. æOn the ███
███ WingÆ is his first album without voice since 1990 ███
███ and is played on ethnic musical instruments from all ███
███ around the world, the three most prominent being the ███
███ sattar, a bowed instrument with one metal string and ███
███ ten resonating strings from the Uigur people in ███
███ Western China, the mudbedsh, a reed instrument from ███
███ Iraq and the hne', another reed instrument from ███
███ Burma. This gives the album an incredibly unique ███
███ sound that is hard to pin down û itÆs not ███
███ traditional music from any country in specific, yet ███
███ it has echoes of traditional Chinese and Japanese ███
███ compositions, seams of Middle Eastern music and of ███
███ course the influence of European classical ███
███ traditions. It is more than daring to attempt ███
███ something as adventurous as this but Micus succeeds, ███
███ allowing the instruments to take hold of the album ███
███ organically, their sound leading the compositions ███
███ into one direction or another. The album in itÆs ███
███ entirety plays like a beautifully haunting poem or a ███
███ film without words, seeping into your memory slowly ███
███ and assuredly becoming quietly more unforgettable as ███
███ each note passes by. I would suppose this is as ███
███ close as we get to achieving æZenÆ on record û ███
███ absolutely beautiful stuff. ███
