Following the acclaim garnered by his "Broken/Shadowboxing" twelve a few months back, Martyn at long
last delivers the opening gambit in what promises to be one of the more innovative and boundary-pushing
labels operating in and around dubstep. With roots in Drum & Bass and a healthy interest in 4/4, Martyn
produces a kind of hybrid sound that manages to make a lot with very little, and its this stylistic minimalism
that gives this music its aesthetic edge. "Velvet" on the A-Side here makes use of a light, lilting motif
melody that edges its way into the mix with an almost Balearic vibe, but it's "Twenty Four" on the flipside
that really pushes the envelope, making use of a much more full-bodied palette and a tight break clipped
and skewed around neon strings to create a midnight funk that's as far removed from the masculine musk
of your typical dubstep as can be. This is tight, edgy, impossibly cool material from an artist and label that
we expect very big things from. KILLER!
