To judge from his painting and photography - and you can do that for yourself by visiting his website -
Janko Bartelink has an affinity for the Dutch landscape. He also composes and records music privately,
where his predilection for natural phenomena also comprise the main focal point.
This, his eleventh album, is comprised of six weather reports from the month of December 2005. Each
track title indicates date, meteorological conditions (e.g., "Overcast with Showers"), as well as recording
wind velocity and temperature. His report is evocatively transmitted via piano, xylophone (or is that a
marimba?) and suitably amorphous electronics.
I find the entire set just lovely, melancholy but with a touch of hope. The final track is downright sprightly,
cantering like a young colt let out into the meadow to test his legs for the first time.
I imagine December in Holland to be a rather drab month, and though only one of his "days" is described
as "Clear", Janko manages to convey a winter not so much of dour discontent as of quiet resignation to the
inevitability of the season and the cozy contemplation to be taken by beholding it from indoors through a
misty windowsill.
