What we're gonna do right now is go way back...
As impossible as it is to imagine in this era of microgenre,
rudderless dance journalism and poverty of imagination there was a
place on West 38th Street where for a period of time between 1988
and 1992 it all came together.
So many stories started here that we can't possibly list them all
but in the house of Mendez and Russell it was possible to find the
scenes not songs of the Burrell Bros, the dubby experimentation of
Konders, the jazzy excursions of Peter Daou and Smash, the deepest
garage of Musto, Simonelli and Bastone, the disco stylings of Joey
Negro, the breakbeat science of How & Little, Dee and Bones, the
techno roots of Beltram and the MAW blueprint under one roof and
often on one shelf of your local record shop (remember them).
Ronald Burrell and the mysterious Basil Thomas bring it home with
the first of two Nu Groove outings. Stripped down urban grooves
with spoken word thang on side A and more pastoral and abstract on
B1 and B3 respectively. Sheer quality and still played out today.
