PRESS RELEASE: "The first release from Roadburn Records is an
extremely heady affair. By melding modern classical compostion
with doom drums, the band White Darkness have thrown open the door
to a vast universe of musical possibility. At times, they offer
dark ambient movie soundscapes reminiscent of Shinjuku Thief or
Coph Nia ù darkly tense portraits of things best left undisturbed.
Elsewhere they evoke the heroically martial tones of Der
Blutharsch backing a Shostakovich- inspired string quartet.
Throughout ôNothingö there are two constants. The first is a
richly textured, deeply evocative environmentà dark, epic piano
melding with subtle electronics casting somber images of manÆs
struggle against nature. The second is the insistent pulse of
funeral doom drumming ù invoking the spirit and aura of doom
legends like Thergothon and Skepticism. White Darkness start from
these places and expand on them, creating the perfect mix of
modern classical doom.
White Darkness is the sonic creation of dutchman Jason Kohnen.
A one-man symphony creating his personal interpretations of
nihilistic thoughts, melding modern classical composition with
tradiotional funeral doom.
White Darkness throws open the doors to vast universes of musical
possibility, creating darkly tense portraits of things best left
undisturbed."
The term white darkness describes the entrancing force that comes
over oneself, rising from the earth directly into one's body, its
whiteness a glory, and its darkness, terror. This effect depends
on self-surrender and a degree of depersonalization, although an
observing part of the ego is still present. White is sublimity,
darkness is terror. They are unified at the climax of the trance.
In this emptiness there is oblivion. An emptiness filled with
powers that move in the most sublime fashion, entranced gods,
divine dancing. The term white darkness is paradoxical, but
paradox is often required to point to non-ordinary reality.
The concept White Darkness was to take the essence of Doom Metal
(the funeral drums and melodic dirges) and place it into a
futuristic and nihilistic background. Replacing the traditional
guitars with piano and cello and using electronics to provide the
digital atmosphere. Seeing Doom Metal as usually inspired by times
and ages past it felt like an interesting combination to pursue.
Moulding Mandelbrot set (Buddhabrot) imagery with the imagery of
skulls to create a neverending loop of misery.
Cathedral's debut 'Forest of Equilibrium' and St.Vitus' 'V' are
undeniably a huge influence on the musical outcome of this album
and the gloom of these albums can be seen as blueprint for the
'Nothing' album.
The album track titles are influenced partly by internet scripting
and Cyberpunk author Kenji Siratori who did some spoken word on
the album. The illogical combination of what seems random word use
gives a seemingly sinister and mysterious futuristic feel to the
titles and text.
