There is no question that Magnus Lindgren is one of the
hottest drawing cards in Swedish jazz. Ever since his debut û
the Grammy-nominated æJazz i SverigeÆ album ôWay Outö from
1999 û exuberant reviews and awards have been showered on
Magnus for both recordings and live performances. But Magnus
Lindgren has not only gained attention here at home. Together
with his quartet û Mathias Algotsson, piano, Fredrik Jonsson,
bass and Jonas Holgersson, drums û he has regularly toured
abroad with great success, and today Magnus Lindgren plays
abroad more often than at home in Sweden. One of the
quartetÆs fans is legendary founder of the Montreux Festival
Claude Nobs, who, during the summer, gave them three evenings
at this yearÆs edition of the festival. During the course of
the year, they have given acclaimed performances together
with opera diva Barbara Hendricks under the auspices of the
Montreux Jazz Festival when the festival made guest
appearances in Singapore and Prague.
It is not only saxophonist and flutist Magnus Lindgren that
reaps all the praise. He is a popular and often contracted
arranger, particularly when it comes to popular music. The
commission of writing music for the Nobel Banquet in 2003 is
only one example among many showing that his skill as a
composer is greatly appreciated and much in demand. It is an
established fact that the music for the Nobel festivities,
written for jazz musicians and a small classic ensemble û the
Stockholm Sinfonietta conducted by Hans Ek û at least in part
contributed to making ôMusic for the Neighboursö a reality
(and sections of the material are also found on the new
album), but Magnus Lindgren has wanted to write for a
symphony orchestra for quite some time. Bill EvansÆ classical
recording with a symphony orchestra on the Verve label served
as one source of inspiration. The basic concept is a meeting
with MagnusÆs quartet, supported by guests artists Rigmor
Gustafsson, who in this context has more of an instrumental
role, percussionist Magnus Persson, and a symphony orchestra.
In conductor Hans Ek and the Malm÷ Opera Orchestra, Magnus
Lindgren has found a partner that truly understands his
intentions. ôI have been interested in conductor Hans Ek for
some time, since he also composes and does arrangements. He
also has a great interest in jazz and contemporary art music.
Our collaboration has inspired both of us. Our first
opportunity to work together was at the Nobel Banquet in
2003. The Malm÷ Opera Orchestra is used to moving between
different musical fields, from musicals to opera. The
Orchestra is also relatively young (14 years) and most of the
musicians are about my age, which means that our musical
references are fairly similar.ö
It is not only the musical qualities that make ôMusic for the
Neighboursö so special. The album is also unique from a
technical point of view. ôMusic for the Neighboursö had its
premiere performance, and was recorded, during a concert at
StockholmÆs Concert Hall on September 24, 2004. Sound
technicians from Sveriges Radio, led by Maurice Mogard, made
the recording on its new 5.1 DTS recording system. A film
team, directed by Paul Vesenlund, was also on hand and filmed
the concert (broadcast on September 11 by Sveriges Television
as the ôConcert of the Weekö). The plan called for producing
a CD with a stereo mix and a DVD with a 5.1 mix. Since that
time, a new format û so new that it wasnÆt found in the
Swedish record industryÆs Grammotex database until the end of
August 2005 û called Dual Disc has made it possible to
combine both of these media on one-and-the-same sound source.
ôMusic for the Neighboursö is therefore possibly the very
first Swedish Dual Disc release.
ôMusic for the Neighboursö is also Magnus LindgrenÆs first
record released under his own name on the Amigo label, even
if itÆs not the first time he has performed on an Amigo
album. When the collaboration began in 2004, Magnus was
touring together with Jojje Wadenius in a band that
originally went under the name Made in Sweden 3, but which
the company eventually produced as the Jojje Wadenius Band
featuring Magnus Lindgren, under the title ôInterloopö (AMCD
898).
