Ripper's note: As the CD booklet explains (see inside scan)
"Please don't worry about your stereo on track 4. The
crackling you can hear is the sound of David's amp dying
midway through the tune."
From Bookmat:
The immensely talented David Thomas Broughton teams up with
woodwind and string ensemble 7 Hertz for this excellent
collaboration, recorded in St, Mark's Church in Leeds.
Apparently no fixed songs were brought to the table, instead
the musicians just feel their way around. This is no improv
black hole though: genuinely excellent compositions come out
of the experiment, with Broughton thankfully curbing the use
of his once quite novel loop pedal (frankly KT Tunstall owns
that technique, so back off) and instead placing more emphasis
on naturally evolving songwriting. 'Weight Of My Love'
features some of the gloomiest lyrics you're likely to hear
this side of a Nick Cave murder ballad, intertwining lines
about death lurking on the horizon with references to pasties
from Gregg's bakeries. And it isn't even remotely comical. I
actually feel terrible that the guy in the song can't afford
the baked goods he craves. It's a real heartbreaker. Sombre,
staccato strings chop in and out while Broughton's ghoulish
vocal timbres stab at you, and so the tone for this maudlin
yet tremendously rewarding album is set. Superb.
