| | This fifth release on Dee Jay Recordings | |
| | reads like a who's who of the London jungle | |
| | scene circa 1993. Let's break it down for | |
| | y'all. Johnny Jungle is an alias of one Jim | |
| | Polo, better known these days as Pascal, | |
| | owner of the Frontline label and part of the | |
| | True Playaz collective. The original | |
| | appeared on his own Face label, with a | |
| | catalogue number of RAINT004. That label was | |
| | co-owned by Neil Vass, aka Sponge. One | |
| | of Pascal & Sponge's many pseudonyms for | |
| | recording together was Bad Influence -- the | |
| | name they did the B-side mix of "Johnny" | |
| | under. Sponge actually had been recording | |
| | earlier than Pascal, and had a major '91 rave | |
| | hit, entitled "Dub War", under the name Dance | |
| | Conspiracy. Dance Conspiracy was actually a | |
| | trio, however -- Sponge, DJ Pulse, and | |
| | Stretch. As you know DJ Pulse owned his own | |
| | label, Creative Wax, as well as recorded | |
| | for labels such as Moving Shadow and | |
| | Whitehouse. Stretch would later go on to own | |
| | his own label as well, A-Ko Records, as well | |
| | as record for Creative Wax and Reinforced. | |
| | | |
| | Got it? As for the tuneage... not much needs | |
| | to be said. "Johnny" is one of the tunes | |
| | that launched the whole darkside vibe of | |
| | hardcore, and is responsible for making drum | |
| | and bass what it is today. After one release | |
| | on Face, two remix 12"s on Dee Jay, and three | |
| | more 10"s on Suburban Base, it's firmly | |
| | cemented as one of the all time jungle | |
| | classics. And if ya didn't know... bout time | |
| | you did. | |
