If you were to look up the phrase blissed out in a dictionary of common phrases,
a picture of The High Violets featured on the page. This Oregonian band is so in
touch with their inner shoegazer, they probably think that all recorded music
stopped being made after 1992. Yet, their last album, To Where You Are was
hailed by many as being a classic work of shoegazing revivalism.
The High Violets , as if taking a further cue from the past, have taken several
of their songs and had them remixed, ala Slowdive when they released their In
Mind EP. The Violets record, Satellite Remixes, is packed to the gills with
expansive remixes of songs that were already so ridiculously spatial and
ethereal they sound as if they don't even exist. The songs are wispy and
otherworldly and the beats found on each remix cling to the song as they rustle
by silently. It's nice stuff that sounds as if Slowdive or Curve found a Roland
808 somewhere and began adding beat after beat to everything they had ever
recorded.
DonÆt think that Satellite Remixes is some fill the gap sort of record. It
isnÆt. In fact, the album has some real heart behind it and features some
quality remixers tackling the already heavenly sounds of The High Violets. From
the legendary Ulrich Schnauss to Carmen Rizzo and Northern Ireland's, Basic,
Satellite Remixes is far from a let down.
The mixes themselves vary from up-tempo dance floor shuffling gems to down tempo
and nearly ambient tracks. It's a perfect mix of tempos and arrangements that
blends well with The High Violets sound and atmospherics and as a result the
record never gets dull. From Ulrich Schnauss' sweeping, angelic, and
ambient-like, "Chinese Letter," to Basic's Goldfrappish dance floor workout,
"FA," Satellite Remixes takes The High Violets influences and ideas and brings
them headlong into the future.
