O blimey, that 'nu-gaze' tag isn't going anywhere is it? This Invada compilation
even goes so far as to appropriate the term for part of its subtitle, drawing on
an assortment of shoegaze-influenced bands in an attempt to capture a particular
scene. This music tends to be united by its preoccupation with reframing
conventional guitar-based indie tropes with excessive digital effects and
morphing production techniques, and has as much to do with the 'dream-pop'
school as it does the more conventional shoegaze list of references. On the one
hand, there's a shimmering effulgence to the hyperactive wall-of-sound textures
of Rumskib's 'Hearts On Fire' that recalls the Cocteau Twins, while on the other
The Fauns' 'The Sun Is Cruising' takes a more muscular My Bloody Valentine-style
approach, piling on the distortion. The only really big name on the compilation
is Ulrich Schnauss, who offers up an edit of 'Stars', resulting in a slightly
different version of the song to that found on his album, Goodbye. Apparently
it's not just the music that's been dug up from the shoegaze time capsule: the
diabolical band names of the age have made an unwelcome return too it would
seem: Presents For Sally are probably the most heinous offenders on this front,
although Soundpool give them a decent run for their money. Genre fans will be
pleased to find plenty of new bands to investigate thanks to this compilation,
but if you're not especially interested in 'gaze (whether 'shoe' or 'nu') don't
for a moment expect to be converted by this collection.
