group members: noko / trevor / howard
apollofourforty (or stealth sonic orchestra) are one of the best
groups around. they have released many astounding records,
including the singles krupa, ain't talkin' 'bout dub and raw
power, and two of the best albums in my collection - electro glide
in blue and millennium fever. apollo 440 were originally from
liverpool, england, but are now recording @ apollo control,
camden, london. the group heavily support liverpool fc, who
regularly do well in the english football league, but haven't won
for a few years.
apollofourforty consist of noko, trevor and howard. there are also
many other musicians and artists who join the main three - such as
mary mary, who is featured on the last two hits - raw power and
ain't talkin' 'bout dub. others include:
elizabeth gray
keith holden
ewan macfarlane
harry k (also on raw power)
cliff hewitt (the drummer on krupa - i therefore think he's a
genius)
billy mackenzie
plus many others, who have helped to make apollofourforty one of
the most ingenious groups of the decade. in my personal view,
apollo 440 are up there with prodigy, chemical brothers and
faithless as one of the greatest 'dance' groups ever. whether all
these groups can be classified as dance is up to you, there are
many different arguments about the definition of dance music, but
unless apollo 440, prodigy, chemical brothers or faithless want to
complain, i'll call them all dance.
i find it very hard to choose my favourite apollo 440 track,
because i love every single one. krupa is my favourite song of all
time - mainly because it changed my whole taste in music - it made
me obsessed with dance music, and i haven't looked back since. it
is also a very cleverly written song, and how they manage to play
it live i don't know. ain't talkin' 'bout dub is a classic. it is
one of the best records ever, and no party rocks without it. raw
power has the most amazing bass line - i love it so much i had
those few notes going round my head for weeks. it was also the
first ever number one on mackie's playlist! i also really love
tears of the gods, pain in any language (featuring the late billy
mackenzie) and carrera rapida. millennium fever had loads of great
tracks too - including the amazing astral america and the wicked
liquid cool.
