Jason Choi self-produced his own record, Leave the Night
Behind, and co-produced Finland's Awake Arise the Great
Untouchable, Will Farina's The Voice Around your Wrists, and
Nicole Miglis's upcoming, yet-to-be-named release.
ôEverybody in the Melbourne, Florida, music scene looks up to
him as sort of an indie rock grandfather, Team Grizzly
continues. The title isn't arbitrary: he's played with acts
like Castanets, Madeline, Phosphorescent, Defiance, Ohio, the
Living Blue, Scout's Honor, and a handful of others.
Jason Choi and his band, The Sea, have been likened to
melodic acts such as American Football and Sharks Keep
Moving, and rightly so: what these groups have in common is
their uncanny ability to mesh melodic guitars with vocals to
create a fluent sound that depends not on any instrument in
particular, but all in general. It is a collaborative effort
to the fullest extentùsurprising, considering Choi started
his career as a solo musician. Remnants of his one-man-band
remain in Choi's strong voice delivered directly. But even
the vocals can't stand alone on this album; the rhythm and
melodies of Choi's vocals only shine when paired with the
counter-rhythms and harmonies of the guitars. Holding down
the dialogue between voice and instrument is solid percussion
sometimes a drum set (Reminder), sometimes an electronic beat
(More Than Many Sparrows), sometimes a mere cymbal (Leave The
Night Behind). Even so, the beat never forces the melody
into a generic formula. Instead, the percussion often drives
the song toward an unexpected end (a faster tempo, a wholly
new beat, or a complete dropping out) which is always more
interesting than what was anticipated.
After assembling his band, The Sea, in 2003, Choi and his
newfound group set out for a primarily southeast summer tour
in 2004, playing from Florida to Texas and even into New
York. Leave the Night Behind was self-released in June,
2006, and is set for a re-release in February, 2008, by Team
Grizzly.
