Release Notes:
AndrΘ Fernandes was born in Lisbon in 1976. He
finished his studies at the HotClub of Portugal
Jazz School where he nowadays teaches Guitar and
Ensemble. In 1996 was awarded a scholarship from
Berklee College of Music that he attended for two
years, until he moved to New York City.
During his time in the USA he studied with Hal
Crook , John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Mick
Goodrick, Kenny Werner, among others. He was
awarded the ┤Stephen Holland Award for Outstanding
Musicianship┤.
Amongst his collaborations are musicians like Lee
Konitz, Mßrio Laginha, Chris Cheek, Cyro Baptista,
Bill McHenry, Jochen Rueckert, Perico Sambeat,
Julian Arguelles, AviShai Cohen, Eli Degibri, Pedro
Moreira, Alexi Tuomarila, Bernardo Moreira, Jesus
Santandreu, Jorge Reis, Carlos Barreto, Tomßs
Pimentel, Jarmo Savolainen, Furio diCastri , Phil
Markowitz and Joπo Paulo Esteves da Silva.
He has played all over the world with several
groups like the Lee Konitz New Nonet, Maria Joao,
Perico Sambeat┤s Quartet, Nelson Cascais Quintet
and the Jarmo Savolainen Group.
In 2002 he co-founded the Tone of a Pitch label and
studios, and released his first CD as a leader: "O
Osso" (Toap001). This record was voted one of the 5
best portuguese jazz albums in 2002 by AllJazz
Magazine┤s critics poll. He also recorded with the
Bernardo Moreira Sextet for Universal.
He began work with his new band sPiLL, merging Jazz
and Electronica, and released "Amplitude". That
same year he recorded ôPueblosö with the Jorge Reis
4tet, as well as his Quintet┤s second album
ôHowlerö, that was awarded the maximum 5 stars by
Diario de Noticias.
"Timbuktu", his third CD, was released 2006,
followed by "CUBO", which was voted one of the best
of 2007 by the paper "Publico"┤s jazz critics. Also
was considered portuguese jazz musician of the
year.
Andre Fernandes currently plays with his quartet
featuring pianist Mßrio Laginha, and also plays
with the Lee Konitz New Nonet, OJM featuring Lee
Konitz, singer Maria Joao and several other
projects as a sideman.
