Trevor Jackson declared Zero dB's Bongos, Bleeps &
Basslines "Ninja Tune's best release ever." High praise
indeed. Heavyweight Gringos is a remix album based upon
BB&B, calling on the production skills of Daedelus, Peter
Kruder, and a whole bunch of Ninja Tune and Big Dada
stars. Zero dB's Chris Vogado runs the Fluid Ounce label,
so you can expect to find one or two of his signings
cropping up here: Dave De Gato gets the album underway
with his Basement Jaxx-y bassline and percussion jumble.
There's even a dog barking thrown in there somewhere too
(albeit a more hi-fi recording than the one you'll find on
your Casio keyboard). In a similar fashion, Raymond In
Space yammers on in a spirited, tribal house-type fashion.
That tends to be the modus operandi for the Fluid Ounce
crew more generally in fact, but things take a turn toward
more hip hop-oriented sounds thanks to Kids In Tracksuits
and Xrabit. UFO's Toshio Matsurra, meanwhile, provides a
highlight thanks to his jazzy remix of 'Conga Madness',
which sounds like an album James Last might have
contracted sometime in the seventies.
BOSS released the promo sampler ZENCD139P which has five
tracks, here is the fourteen tracks retail ZENCD139 of
this very nice Ninja Tune's record.
