strung together by happenstance this unlikely grouping of friends from various
bands and a bloke they found passed out in the childrenÆs section of the local
library share a mutual obsession for creating challenging noises. But as soon as
they christened themselves,æPl÷kumuligeÆ a Danish phrase meaning æcompletely
impossibleÆ, they began carving out a path all their own.
Pl÷kÆs maiden performance was typical of the bandÆs sweet and infernal
contradictions. It first gave notice of an unwavering confidence as, they led a
full-house brashly through their set of un-punked polka-- yup it came straight,
no mixer, with lyrics read from a bottle of Russian Vodka.
Second it served notice to the band that provincial music audiences were
discerning in their own way, only handing over hard earned cash with an
understanding that theyÆd be entertained and are not always equipped with the
Warholian spectacles that were pre-requisite for enjoying those early Pl÷k
performancesàand so it goes that Pl÷kÆs first public performance has been
sepia-framed with an angry mob of indie/farmer kids with pitchfork haircuts
demanding ticket refunds and brooding house management mulling back alley
beatings.
Still, but for a bruise or two and in the great fashion of the misunderstood
they escaped. Lead singer/bassist Mikkel Hansen divulges how most people
encountering their sound early on, found Pl÷k completely implausible û
ôOur approach to music was anarchistic, but no anarchists in the area were
interested in arranging concerts, so this dubious pleasure went to the
socialists and on rare occasions Amnesty International.ö
And so here were a bunch of musical anarchists being heralded by democracy
loving socialists and humanitarian do-gooders, yup! life proved treacherous in
those early days but thankfully, despite testing everyoneÆs patience, and in the
face of enduring pleas from friends and advisors to put an end to the madness
the band carried on un-phased, playing their æbrand of Russian musicÆ for anyone
whoÆd listen on the ever-more welcoming stages of Denmark. For better or worse
Pl÷k got peopleÆs attention. Their live shows (better described as
live-assaults) left venues spinning, some times scorched, forging Pl÷k's
reputation amongst the dizzy concertgoers who witnessed their feel-good madness.
Amongst a heavy circuit of shows the band released the 2002 '...And that is how
I finally defeated all evil mankind', shortly followed by; 'You run the show, I
drive the ambulance'. The pair of tongue in cheek records found fresh ears for
their music, garnering awards from Danish music critics, slots at festivals and
hordes of indie/farmer kidsÆ pitchfork haircuts now bobbing in approval.
The æcompletely impossibleÆ indie rockersÆ playful style melds twitchy/jerky,
some say, angular guitar chords with all sorts of homemade beats and bleeps,
fusing surf sounds with synth rock and seasoning skaÆd down æoompaÆ-hardcore
with funked-up-polka-dotted bass lines. All perpetuating a jarring relationship
with their gleefully vibrating, insisting and inventive rhythms, but when the
lyrics of Mikkel A. Hansen are thrown on top, youÆve got a throbbing,
invigorated response set to expose the fallacies of our current world....yeah,
that's about it!
This is Pl÷kÆs unflinching stance in music, rustling about in uncomfortable
musical territories, armed only with a fearlessly organic approach, formed out
of a constant war against mediocrity and reveling in the knowledge that theyÆre
creatively unbound by anyone or anything. Pl÷k stands as a serious alternative
to the herds of tendentious rock bands so eager to please the industry. Pl÷k
remind us of all the great rock nÆ roll swindles of our time whilst somehow
simultaneously embarrassing them with music of a complexity that belies itÆs
æjust got out of bed and the drugs are still workingÆ sound!
This year, Pl÷k hit the states, with their explosive U.S. debut EP 'You Tie a
Rock To Your Leg Cuz It Fits You' serving as harbinger to their mass
live-assault on this great nation. This is an EP in the traditional sense of the
meaning û a six track Extended Player not one or two badly forged radio friendly
edits stretched by a hatfull of poor quality remixes, no this is Pl÷k who are
here to pop the pop music bubble with a æForward, ho!Æ in the style of their
Viking forefathers.
