We are all products of our environment. It just so happens
that some are luckier than others when it comes to where
they are from. Building off the rich history of the
Washington DC scene, Olympia is able to draw from the
diverse anthology of the bands that came before them.
Where other bands end up being carbon copies of a fleeting
trend, Olympia has forged a sound all their own. If the
Washington DC music scene is a barrel full of gasoline,
then Olympia is the box of matches.
Following the demise of their band Fairweather (Equal
Vision Records), drummer Shane Johnson and guitarist Peter
Tsouras joined up with bassist Nick Barkley and former
Brand New Disaster (Tribunal Records) vocalist Phil
Williams in late 2005. The band took shape and began
writing songs, recording their first five songs in
December.
The music itself is aggressive and dissonant. Songs like
"ItÆs Okay To Eat The Dead (Times Are Tough)" show
OlympiaÆs jagged edges while not being ashamed to be
heartfelt and sincere. In contrast, the song "The
Resurrectionist" is three-minute blast of rock that slaps
you in the face and leaves you with the bar tab. Musically
the songs show complexity and intelligence, but are
straight forward enough to never let you forget that they
are first and foremost a rock band.
The members of Olympia collectively share roughly five
years of touring experience and plan to add to that total
in 2006. With writing nearly finished for their debut
album, Olympia will be playing shows on the east coast
while making plans to record in the spring.
