Uncomplicated pop isn't so uncomplicated. Actually, the
perfect pop song is usually the hardest thing of all to
write. It's a trick Birmingham's Ocean Colour Scene have
rarely struggled to pull off, especially given the
influence of the Modfather, Paul Weller, and The Beatles
on much of their material (this one included).
I Told You So is a fine example of the perfect recipe -
whisk together three power chords, gently fold until your
complex middle eight makes firm peaks, and then bake for a
spattering over two minutes.
It's certainly true that, no matter how sunny its vibe, I
Told You So might have struggled for an audience if we
were still closing the curtains on blackened skies by 5pm.
But arriving in the week when winter finally gave way to
spring, the track's sugar-coated chord changes and
summery-sweet harmonies make almost perfect sense.
