It seems that every other month there's a new
singer-songwriter force fed by radio and advertising to a
rather suspecting public with the promise that 'one of the
greatest talents of his/her generation' will ultimately
change our lives and make the world a better place. Truth
be told, rookies to the industry tend to follow two very
clear career paths:
a) Fame, over-exposure, The Priory, or b) Disappear
without a trace after one reasonably received long player.
Now, as debut singles go, this little number falls
distinctly into the latter category. That's not to say, of
course, that Feeny is lacking the necessary talent to
succeed, but, after a solitary spin, one is left with the
feeling that, perhaps, she'd be better off in relative
obscurity.
Maybe its something to do with laying bare your soul for
all and sundry to dissect like a flock of ravenous
vultures, but Catherine Feeny seems too delicate for the
rigours of the music industry, and all the destructive
'qualities' that go with it. Lyrically, 'Touch Back Down'
is quite a personal number augmented by a, thankfully,
understated amalgamation of guitar and strings, which
refrain from the usual overwrought effort to drain the
last possible drop of emotion from a song when a simple
melody will do.
Whilst Feeny transplanted herself from Los Angeles to
Norfolk to record her forthcoming album 'Hurricane Glass',
she hasn't left all the Americanisms behind. The country
influence is very evident and her soothing vocals are
certainly more California than Norwich. What remains to be
seen is whether she can ride the wave of this promising
debut and touch back down beyond the circling sharks.
