DECONSTRUCTING DOMINIQUE LISE ~ Dominique Lise (as in ônew lease on lifeö)
enjoyed a perfectly respectable run as a player in several rock, folk, and blues
cover bands in the east coast musical boom town city of Portland, Maine. These
days, Lise is flourishing as an original artist. She has emerged as a
multi-dimensional songwriter with both the musicianship and vocal delivery to
quiet an audience then turn it upside down. Lise picked up her first guitar at
age seven and became a self-proclaimed, ôrock ænÆ roll star" in her own living
room. For Lise, music has been as much a coping mechanism as itÆs been an
artistic form of expression. ôAs a kid, I remember coming home from a school
after having had a really rotten day. I didnÆt have the ability to talk about
it, but IÆd grab my acoustic, lock myself in my bedroom and get the emotion
out,ö says Lise. Her childhood was spent singing at the top of her lungs to
songs by Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bonnie Raitt, The
Doors, and later to Shawn Colvin, Jonatha Brooke, Ani DiFranco, and Lucinda
Williams. The imprints of those times-when the music of other people would be
her sanctuary ûmade a lasting impression on Lise. ôLosing myself in their music
reminded me that I wasnÆt suffering through the human condition alone.ö
Lise joined her first rock band back in the early 90Æs and although she still
says those days were some of the best musical learning experiences of her life,
as it turned out they were harbingers of what was to come. Later Lise found
herself fronting a blues band for three years, and competing at the
International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. During this time she was
honing her guitar and vocal skills and racking up the life experience necessary
to arrive at the place she is in now. Lise also learned the value of having a
potent yet open stage presence. In 2004, after nearly a three year break from
performing with music as the core of her daily existence, Lise was encouraged by
her husband to get back in the game. He even went so far as to build her a
recording studio in their home. Dominique did the only thing she could do--she
barricaded herself in her studio and started writing her own songs. ôI just
allowed myself the time and space to devote my energies to the creative process,
and now I canÆt stop,ö says Lise. There was no shortage of subject matter to
write about as Lise finds inspiration around every corner. ôI write about the
things I know û the people, places and things that make me angry and pissed,
confused, sad, happy and giddy.ö That same year Lise put together a downright
righteous band comprised of mighty drummer boy Tim Myers, electric guitar god,
Paul Newton and in 2006, five string bass guru, Greg Goodwin. Between the three
of them, theyÆve played with and toured nationally and internationally with
bands like Sabretooth Nudist (Swift Ice-cubes), The Bottle Rocket Kings, John
Casper Sedlock, and The Piners, and RCA Recording Artist Ray Lamontagne.
Collectively, this quartet has shared the stage with the likes of The Rustic
Overtones, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, North Mississippi Allstars, The J. Geils
Band, Tad Benoit, Lucinda Williams, and Santana among many others.
