flower records japan have struggled to push japanese talent for
over more than five years and have delivered such fine acts such
as jazztronik (ryota nozaki & friends), bayaka (dj mitsuru &
teruo), little big bee (eitetsu takamiya) and more. their presence
in the world has only been noticed fully through their newer
distribution deals but only few releases make it to the world
outside of japan.
in 1999, su-paka-pooh hit the shelves with their phenomenal track
'kurage' and in it's 'daylight mix' variation, it was brought to
the attention of many dj's and music lovers. the unique mix of
acoustics over simplistic yet dignified electronics was an instant
hit and made people all over the world seek out this obscure
'flower' label. dr. bob jones made this song a staple in his box
and worked with lofty to bring this special track onto chilli
funk's 'hot sauce 2' compilation as well as some remix favours in
return. su-paka-pooh followed up their release with the second
single 'spiral' and a compiled compact disc ep of both hits with
added goodies called 'jelly pattern' in 2000.
now in 2001, chikashi ishizuka & hidehiko murao (who are the
people behind su-paka-pooh) revealed that a new album would be
forthcoming with a 12" teaser called 'aya' that once again
increased interests and sooner than later, their first album
'sunny side garden' hit the streets of japan and with tracks like
'muzika', 'theme de yo-yo' (the great art ensemble of chicago
revision) and 'nikaido' proved their versatility as musicians and
producers. the only problem with the release was the bad
distribution for compact discs which made this and many recent
flower releases almost impossible to get. many licensees are
helping with this situation but the struggle is still present.
special mention: uk's disorient have licensed this album for
worldwide release and will be releasing 'theme de yo-yo' as the
single upcoming with a special remix by little big bee.
