██▓ Love Records was founded in 1966, and existed no ▓██
██▓ longer than thirteen years. In that time, the label ▓██
██▓ released such an outstanding number of jazz, pop, ▓██
██▓ and rock milestones that it is safe to call it the ▓██
██▓ most significant Finnish record company of all ▓██
██▓ time. In the mid-1960s, a few larger record ▓██
██▓ companies were already in existence, but their ▓██
██▓ publishing policy was fairly narrow, safe and ▓██
██▓ calculating, which is still very much the case ▓██
██▓ today. Material that deviated from the mainstream ▓██
██▓ had no place in a recording studio -a gap, which ▓██
██▓ the founders of Love Records, Otto Donner, ▓██
██▓ Christian Schwindt and Atte Blom, decided to fill. ▓██
██▓ Blom was a young journalist, whereas Donner and ▓██
██▓ Schwindt, despite their age, were already ▓██
██▓ established in the Finnish jazz scene. When ▓██
██▓ interviewed for 17-magazine soon after the founding ▓██
██▓ of Love Records, Schwindt outlined the repertory: ▓██
██▓ "..we have five main branches: literary recordings, ▓██
██▓ 1960s classical, jazz, quality pop, and equally ▓██
██▓ good tangos. From the very beginning, the label's ▓██
██▓ recording choices were broadminded and bold, and ▓██
██▓ the hit-seeking publishing policy of large record ▓██
██▓ companies indeed left it a wide margin to roam in. ▓██
██▓ The repertory of Love Records is legendary in its ▓██
██▓ scope, including "literary cabaret records", ▓██
██▓ experimental (and even electronic) underground, ▓██
██▓ Finnish-Swedish ring dance songs, jazz, pop, folk, ▓██
██▓ rock, prog, political songs, and punk. The first ▓██
██▓ releases did not climb very high on the charts, but ▓██
██▓ financial quick wins were hardly the main motive of ▓██
██▓ the idealistic record label execs. During the first ▓██
██▓ years, prominent members of the increasingly ▓██
██▓ radical Finnish avant-garde participated in ▓██
██▓ productions, including famous names from the fields ▓██
██▓ of music, theater, film and literature. Jazz ▓██
██▓ musicians were present at studio sessions already ▓██
██▓ in the early years, but the actual jazz records ▓██
██▓ were mainly produced at the end of the 1960s, and ▓██
██▓ from 1974 to 1977, when Love Records was living its ▓██
██▓ heyday, and had grown into a fairly large company. ▓██
██▓ When glancing through the list of people who ▓██
██▓ contributed on the jazz recordings, one could just ▓██
██▓ as well be reading the "best of" volume of Who's ▓██
██▓ Who in Finnish Jazz: Erik Lindstr÷m, Christian ▓██
██▓ Schwindt, Otto Donner, Eero Koivistoinen, Olli ▓██
██▓ Ahvenlahti, Reino Laine, Mike Koskinen, Juhani ▓██

██▓ might actually be easier to list who didn't record ▓██
██▓ for Love Records. In spite of this fact, and ▓██
██▓ considering the musical background of the founders, ▓██
██▓ Love Records published surprisingly few jazz ▓██
██▓ albums. However, what lacks in quantity is made up ▓██
██▓ for in quality. Love Jazz 1966-1977 is not aiming ▓██
██▓ to be an inclusive cross-section of the jazz ▓██
██▓ produced by Love Records, but focuses instead on ▓██
██▓ some of the more swinging pieces. The compilation ▓██
██▓ contains established jazz classics, a few lesser ▓██
██▓ known, but all the more lively pieces, and a couple ▓██
██▓ of rare treasures. ▓██
