With all the legal buffoonery surrounding the future of
Manchester stalwarts, New Order (sorry û getting my lazy
comparison in early), thereÆs been a detraction in
evolving the sound. What it really needed, was for
someone to explore taking the sound deeper, dirty and
dancier, but retaining the indie sensibilities at the
heart.
Thank heavens, then, that The WhipÆs long-awaited debut
fits that bill perfectly. Insistent drums courtesy of Lil
Fee, and raspy, effortless Bruce Carter vocals, and the
unmistakable twinge of Jim Abbiss on the knobs, make for
what could well be an early contender for the end-of-year
polls.
ôDivebombö, which has been burning up alt-dancefloors for
nearly a year now, loses none of its power û but sounds
strangely out of place, its industrial instrumentalism a
sharp contrast from fellow single ôMuzzle #1ö, which
despite its age, continues to sound fresh. ItÆs that song
that (in true NO/JD style) doesnÆt actually namecheck the
title in the chorus û but drops it in subtly in a verse
somewhere. You probably know it as being called ôGetting
In The Wayö. It isnÆt.
Elsewhere û new single ôTrashö is just begging to be
remixed by the biggest names in the business, whilst
Fire has one of the best drum-thwacks since the Art of
Noise discovered Fairlights.
Not a moment wasted û this is a solid, robust album with
an intelligent modern sound, but yet pays homage to some
of the most important fashions in music. For fans who
have been waiting patiently, this more that delivers.
Spectacularly good.
