A gritty, entrancing capture of a performance by Daouda
Dembele -- a griot from rural Mali, and a wonderful little
snapshot of a style of West African music we've had little
previous exposure to -- played on jelingoni, or ngoni -- a
stringed spike lute. Dembele's work, as captured here, is
vocally conversational -- and his playing is repetitive and
seemingly in service to his charismatic storytelling --
accompanied by someone drumming an overturned gourd. The CD is
a single, untitled, 42 minute performance.
