If you're not a religious person, music can be a forceful
substitute. Concerts as masses, classic albums as bibles, not
one God but many (try to be selective though, Kid Rock doesn't
really count here).
When thinking of music in a religious light this latest album
by Honey Owens a.k.a. Valet comes close to resembling an outer
body experience. The journey begins with the floating æWe Went
ThereÆ, assisted on dreamy vocals by Adrian Orange, the piece
is a gorgeous spaceblues tune that gets beautifully lifted to
greater heights by enraptured electric guitars before finally
zoning out on a wave off fuzzy drones.
This more or less is the path she laid out on her previous
effort, æBlood Is CleanÆ, but where that album is a really
intimate affair this one aims for more than just that. æNaked
AcidÆ has a huge space feel to it that doesnÆt restrict Owens
to mere earth, she actually takes off on more than one
occassion. æKehaarÆ is such a track, it might start intimate
with the contemplative guitar playing and subdued, overdubbed
vocals but as soon as the lazy drumming kicks in together with
spaced out guitar solo∩ng, the mood changes from introvert to
ecstatic. You might not notice it immediately, it might not
hit you before it ends but this is really where youÆve had to
close your eyes to realise the powers that were.
æFireÆ takes the spaceblues game up another notch. OwensÆ
vocals here sound clearer than anywhere else on this album,
still drenched in reverb but the clearer production shows
Owens has a lot more to offer than just a ghostly mumble.
Elsewhere, the raw edges of æFuck ItÆ get smoothed out by
OwensÆ once again hazy vocals before slowly ascending
guitarchords reach a thunderous climax complete with the
speedy drumming of guest player Mark Evan Burden.
This album comes together great when youÆre having that
wonderful evening all by yourself. A glass of wine and this
record could be all you need then. - foxyd
