Tenor-saxophonist Archie Shepp and pianist Horace Parlan had
teamed up for a series of well-received SteepleChase studio
duet albums that found the former avant-garde tenor exploring
melodic and emotional renditions of traditional folk songs and
blues. For this fairly rare Plainisphare CD, Shepp (who plays
effective alto on two of the eight songs) is once again matched
with Parlan although this time in a club. They mix together
such tunes as "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "See See Rider" and
"Go Down Moses" with a couple of standards ("Embraceable You"
and Duke Ellington's "I Didn't Know About You") and Parlan's
original "Billie's Bossa." Although Shepp's three vocals are an
acquired taste, this set features some of his finest playing of
the 1990s.
