For a band that keeps such a low profile, it is very difficult to write
about them, but I will do my best. Faceless is composed of a duo
(Thomas Albrighton and Allstair Cormack) who kick out funky grooves
from Britain. Their self titled debut is a composition of chill-out dub
tracks, high speed jungle tracks, and ambient tracks. In lesser terms,
it's something that Americans should be jealous of. Tracks like "Dusty
Empire" and "Summer Of Dub" are very laid back with a hip-hoppish vibe
to them, very comparable to Scorn and A Tribe Called Quest. "Sequin
Ocean" is more on the lines of a club track, with a very high tempo and
textured synths.
The duo remain deeply in their anonymity by communicating only by fax,
and once in a while, by phone. Mutant Sound Systems have never met them
before in person, and it is rumored that one of the members is British
Royalty! Well, if the Royal family put out music like this, then we
would all be in line to get Prince William tickets. But for now, we
have the pleasure of Faceless, which is an excellent CD. You can order
Faceless from Mutant Sound Systems in New York.
