You may already find yourself familiar with Stefan
Nemeth from his work as part of Radian and as the
co-founder of Mosz Records. Nemeth has been at work
on a number of film-related projects since the turn
of the century, but only recently came to the
conclusion that the soundtracks he'd composed
(usually for experimental video work or shorts
programmed for film festivals) were worthy of
attention in their own right. After a period of
editing and development, Nemeth has at last
discharged this material as an album unto itself,
mapping out a diverse sonic terrain populated by
acoustic & programmed instruments as well as a host
of recorded and manipulated sound matter. It all
sets off from a comparatively organic starting
point, from the percussion, electric guitar and
field recordings of 'Via L4-Norte', which remains
tonally very abstract, but ultimately more
of-this-world than the foggy rumbles that kick off
'Field', or the motorised, electronic shards that
propel 'Transitions'. The second half of the album
delves deeper into a world of abstraction, and is
the more successful because of that:
'Luukkaankangas' is filled with electrically
charged vapour and unfurling drone, whilst tangible
melodic elements spill over the surface
occasionally. Better still are the cold, piano
treatments of 'Soprus' and the effervescent,
sustaining vistas of 'Ortem Ende'. Lovely.
