Recorded without the use of any computers whatsoever, the band opted instead for
╜ inch tape on 4-track recorders, which was actually half of the old Columbia
Records remote recording unit. It was as if the band traveled back in time to
1967 to enter the studio. Mitch Easter, who was the championing force behind
such an experimental test, produced pinnacle recordings for REM, Pavement and
Wilco and is one of the few people qualified and motivated enough to take on
such a project today.
ôMitch felt our band would be good candidates to do this sort of experiment. We
took his suggestion to heart when some of the new songs we were working on
seemed to beckon a less layered, dense recording approachö says one of Birds Of
Avalon's dueling lead guitarists, Cheetie Kumar, adding ôMysterious sounds and
tones happen that you could never contrive deliberately and that is just what we
were after.ö
