I SUONI DEL POLLINO. FRANCESCO RUSCIANO - Francis Rusciano,
said uncle Francisch the sweetmeat, was born on January
15, 1931, in Terranova del Pollino (PZ), the first of 11
brothers he grew up with his maternal grandparents. He
remained in Terranova from 1931 till 1941, then he moved, from
1941 to 1975, to Alessandria del Carretto (CS), and from
there, in 1975 to Trebisacce (CS), where he lives since
then.He plays a little bagpipe (su[o]nici[e]ll or surdulina),
a key bagpipe of 2 palms 1/2, tambourine (tammurr), a clutch
drum (cup cup). He started playing when he was about 15 years
old (1946). In those years he frequented two musicians: Joseph
Napoli (Sceppucurc [i]) and Paul Chidichimo (Paul
iSc[i]affh[a]r), he practised surdulina (bagpipe) whith them.
The same surdulina that Francis is playing at present , with
whom we have recorded was given to him by Paul Sc[i]affh [a]
r, around 1950, so it is now approximately 50 years old. Later
he frequented other musicians, including the Covelli brothers,
particularly Peter Covelli (Pi[e]tri tarramot ), Vincenzo
Adduci (Vici[e]nz Revh[l]r, father of our Peter Adduci) and
Domenico Adduci (Dominic[u] ipalachetta).People used to play
serenades during the engagement parties, and practised during
breaks in the workplace, for example, while looking after
animals, or when killing the pig to make traditional preserved
meat products. This was a real important occasion to stay
together with relatives and closest friends, like in occasion
of the grape-harvest. Only playing, people become
players.PIETRO ADDUCI - Peter Adduci said zi 'Pi[e]tr'i
Rev.[l]r, was born on May 27, 1939 in Alessandria Del
Carretto (CS). The first of 7 brothers, from 1939 to 1967 he
lived in Alessandria Del Carretto. Since 1967 he lives in
Trebisacce (CS). He finished his elementary school leaving in
popular evening classes. Married in 1960, he has three sons
who live in Trebisacce. He started playing when he was about 10
years old (around 1949) , in the family, with his father,
Vincenzo Adduci (Vici[e]nz 'Revh[o]l), one of the best pipers
of his period. As a child, during the fir-tree feast (last
Sunday in April), in Alessandria Del Carretto, Peter, already
a talented player, was tied near the top of the tree, during
its transportation, to play the bagpipe without the danger of
falling. Then, still very young, he accompanied and played
with Joseph Napoli (Scepp'u 'curc[i]'), Paul Chidichimo (Paul
'Sc[i]affh[a]r), the Covelli brothers, in particularly Peter
     Covelli(Pi[e]tr'' tarramot')and Dominic Adduci (Dominic [u]'
palachetta). These were the most famous pipers of that period.
Grown up in a family of pipers, Peter has absorbed this music
in the most natural and spontaneous way. WALTER ASTORINO -
Walter Astorino was born on January 8 1967 in Trebisacce (CS).
The second of two brothers, he lived in Trebisacce until 1985,
and in Florence until 1999, where he studied architecture. He
now lives in Trebisacce, he is married and has a daughter. He
is a tradesman. He gives concerts of jazz, bossa nova, blues,
tarantella and guitar lessons; he repairs lutes, is recording
sound and decates himself to micro wine-making.He started
playing around 7 years (1974). Totally self-taught, he started
playing in the family, but by himself. Son of a guitar and
mandolin player, as a child he had many tools with which to
play. The contribution of radio and tapes (cassettes)has been
fundamental. His training took place in loco, because he
started playing in local concerts and festivals since he was
12 years old.Very important was his collaboration with the
Florentine keyboard player, Antonio Muti, with whom he founded
the Officine Grunf, a research laboratory in music at 360
degrees (Fahrenheit), ranging from the production of valve
amplifiers, concerts, recordings, the extreme hi-fi, the
vintage etc, everything in the spirit of the character Otto
Grunf, group TNT (Alan Ford). He worked at the soundtrack of
the film Battuta di caccia in alto mugello of Roberto
Galante (festival of Tampere Finland, Belluria, Hamburg,
Florence, Matera), and always for the same director, at the
documentary A devotion to step dance filmed between Riace
and Reggio Calabria, which deals with the musical and cultural
meeting of the Rom people and the local population, during the
rites of the feast of the Saints Cosimo and Damiano (Amsterdam
Dance, Vomax Vienna and European tour). He collaborated with
the studio Opificio Ciclope in Bologna, providing music for
the U.S.O. (Unidentified submarine objects) series for Sailing
Channel. In recent years he has organized and participated in
Jazz seminars with Ramberto Ciammarughi and Fabio Zeppetella,
and in 2007 he was artistic manager of Scirocco Jazz
Festival and Scirocco Jazz Stage with Umberto Fiorentino,
Fabrizio Sferra and Gianluca Renzi. Since ten years he has set
up the CIM 8 Grunf (Center for Hygiene Musical 8 Grunf),
Trebisacce, Laboratory where he practises his musical
activities, and where the sounds have been recorded.
