Ah, yes, the 4/4 pulse of techno, so omnipresent
that outsiders hear nothing else while afficionados
don't even notice it. The bang-bang-bang-bang of the
drum is all over these early Jeff Mills albums, but
that's like saying there are guitars all over a
Rolling Stones LP. It's not the instruments you use,
it's how you use them, and for Mills the straight-up
kick was the foundation atop which he could explore
his earliest ideas about unadulterated rhythm.
His background as an '80s radio DJ and membership in
industrial outfit Final Cut had given Mills a firm
grounding in the ways of the drum machine long
before he went techno. But here, freed of MCs and
singers and the collaborative spirit of Underground
Resistance, he was able to treat those exciting
rhythm boxes as an end instead of a means. The other
synths that intercut the beats here might as well be
drums, too; whether they sizzle like lasers or nag
like plucked strings, they're simply there to give
the kick drums something to syncopate with.
When the tracks do deviate from the pattern - as
with the sensual groove of "Solid Sleep" listeners
may well find themselves suddenly jarred out of an
involuntary trance. Dance genres such as disco that
haven't lost their vestigal musicality allow the
rhythmically challenged to focus in on things like
melodies and words; here, on most tracks, there's
nothing to cling to but the hidden complexities of
the drums.

Well, it happened. RMF changed. Don't get confused here,
we're not another newbie group - we already brought more
than 150 quality releases to the scene since we began in
Aug 2001. We haven't only changed our name but also our
state of mind. We changed the way we operate and how the
group runs... all for the better, obviously :)
You will hear more of us in the future and hopefully
all good things! We're still bringing quality music to
the scene, just under a different name... Enjoy.
