Though the harmonica is one of the smallest, cheapest
instruments you can buy, it is capable of great agility,
sensitivity and emotional power. So imagine that multiplied by
four. SvΣng are a Finnish harmonica quartet formed by Eero
Grundstr÷m. Between them, the four virtuosos play chromatic
and diatonic harmonicas, chord harmonica and bass harmonica,
which gives the band a rich ensemble timbre. They can be
surprisingly rhythmic, too - especially on the more
Gypsy-influenced numbers, and their adaptation of Silia Waltz
by Viljami Niittykoski. However, there's a limit to what you
can do with just harmonica - even when you use overdriven tube
amplifers, as Grundstr÷m does on the emotional Oh How Do I
Long For. When played solo, harmonicas cut through the densest
backing track. Hearing just four over an entire album is too
much of a good thing.
